The Defence boom walk with optional Swim.

This approx 5 mile walk will take around 3hrs.

The Shoeburyness defence boom is an interesting structure which was built as part of our WWII defences. We will view and learn a little about it however most of this walk will be about wandering on beautiful sandbanks which are a peaceful place to walk for those who love nature. On this walk we will walk on sandbanks and wade across creeks. You will have the option to swim in the sea over two miles out from the beach and again in some creeks further inshore where the water is usually much warmer. We should get a clear view of ships in the nearby shipping lanes and the WWII army forts which have been a fixture in the Thames since 1941.

Important - expect to get wet up to knee deep at least on this walk and a little muddy. It’s best to wear shorts or a swimming costume with old trainers or beach shoes. Dress for the weather. On hot days the sun can be brutal as there is no shade. Bring a wind proof jacket, a towel if you’re going to swim, water, snacks, sun cream, and a hat

Only you know your own swimming ability, so if you choose to swim you must take responsibility for your own safety.
